If you think you may have a sexuallytransmitted infection (STI), go to your GP or localsexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. Most STIscan be successfully treated, but it's important to getany symptoms checked as soon as possible.
Seven days later. How long can it take to receivepositive test results? Seven days or longer. If a persontests positive for chlamydia, the infection is easilycurable with proper treatment.
Chlamydia is spread through sexual contact withan infected partner. It can be spread through any type ofunprotected sex, including penis in vagina sex, anal sex, and oralsex (3). An eye infection, conjunctivitis, can also beacquired through contact with genital fluids infected withchlamydia.
All sexually active gay and bisexual menshould be tested at least once a year for syphilis,chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Those who have multiple or anonymouspartners should be tested more frequently forSTDs (i.e., at 3- to 6-month intervals).
To test for chlamydia and gonorrhea, forinstance, all that is required is a urine sample. For otherSTDs– like herpes, hepatitis, HIV and syphilis, asmall blood sample is all the STD testing centerrequires. Many doctors' offices will test for STDs bydoing an invasive (and sometimes painful) swab– we donot!
Negative/Normal: No gonorrhea bacteriawere found. If you have certain symptoms, you may getadditional STD tests to find out the cause.Positive/Abnormal: You are infected with thegonorrhea bacteria. Regardless of your treatment, be sure tolet your sex partner know if you have tested positive forgonorrhea.
All laboratory testing, including STDtests, accuracy rates are measured in terms ofsensitivity and specificity. Our chlamydia and gonorrheatest panel has a sensitivity rate of 99.8% and a specificityof 99.3%.
Treatment
- Antibiotics. Antibiotics, often in a single dose, can cure manysexually transmitted bacterial and parasitic infections, includinggonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and trichomoniasis.
- Antiviral drugs. If you have herpes or HIV , you'll beprescribed an antiviral drug.
What Do I Tell My Partner(s)? Ifyou find out that you have a reportable STIlike Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis or HIV, it is important to letpartners know so that they can get tested andtreated. For example, if you have gonorrhea or Chlamydia,anyone you had sex with in the past 60 days is acontact.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea screening is done either througha urine test or through a swab inside the penis inmen or from the cervix in women. The sample is then analyzedin a laboratory. Screening is important, because if you don't havesigns or symptoms, you can be unaware that you have eitherinfection.
STI test results can take between five and 10days. If you have testing done at Planned Parenthood,we'll contact you ONLY if your results are positive. If thisis the case, we'll give you a call to ask you to come back forfollow up.
Walgreens Healthcare Clinics will beginoffering testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)in 18 cities around the United States starting on April 25. Theinfections for which the clinics will test include HIV,Hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, as well as otherconditions.
