Ultra is more HD & slower read/write speed than Extreme. Extreme is more 4K/HD & faster read/write speed, more expensive.
If you're recording at 4K 60fps then a minimum of 64GB will be needed to store all that high definition footage. As an example, 5 minutes of 4K video shot at 30fps on the GoPro Hero7 Black takes up 2.98GB of data, so a days work is going to quickly consume a card.
Here are my top picks for the best SD card for GoPro cameras:
- SanDisk Extreme V30 UHS-I.
- Samsung EVO Select U3 UHS-I.
- Delkin Select V30 UHS-I.
- Lexar 1000x V60 UHS-II.
- PNY Elite-X V30 UHS-I.
How to Accurately Calculate Video File Size (Plus: Bonus Glossary)
| Resolution | Bitrate | Recording Duration per GB |
|---|
| 4K (UHD) | 20 Mbps | 12 minutes |
| 1080p (FHD) | 5 Mbps | 50 minutes |
| 720p (HD) | 1 Mbps | 3.5 hours |
| 480p (SD) | 500 Kbps | 8 Hours |
Using a 128GB sd-card I could get around 8 hours of standard HD video. Only about 4 hours if I used 4k resolutions. The battery itself will also vary based on ambient temperature, etc. But 1 hour of actual recording time is my general experience and expectation.
Formatting your SD card in the GoPro camera is the best way to remove old video and photos files. When you format your SD card in your camera the original file structure and partitions are restored so that the SD card will continue to properly communicate with the camera.
It's also something you'll want to do routinely after you've offloaded your photos and videos and want to delete them to free up space again on the memory card for new shooting. It's best practice to format memory cards in the camera. That's true not just of GoPros, but with any camera.
- 1 Open the Settings app.
- 2 Open the Storage option under System Settings.
- 3 Select SD Card at the bottom of the page.
- 4 Select Format.
- 5 Tap on the Format button at the bottom of the page, follow the prompts to complete the process.
If you are seeing 'SD ERR' or 'SD ERROR'Make sure that the SD card is fully inserted in the camera. Please enter the Settings menu and select the trash can icon to Delete All/Format your SD card. You can also format the SD card using the GoPro App or your Mac / Windows computer.
In short, no! Some cameras allow you to shoot without an SD card because they have built-in memory. The GoPro does not have built-in memory recording capabilities. Without an SD card, there's no place for the GoPro to put the data.
Speaking of formatting, it is a good idea to format your cards after each shoot. Once you have downloaded your card and have the images in more than one place, you should format that card before its next use. It keeps things cleaner on the card.
Re: Memory card takes too long to format64gb takes 30 minutes to do a full format and 15 seconds about to clear in the gopro.
How to Format the SD Card in Your Android
- Go to Settings > Device care.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Advanced.
- Under Portable storage, select your SD card.
- Tap Format.
- Tap Format SD card.
One of the reasons that you can't format SD card is that the SD card is set to read only, namely the SD card is write protected. In this case, all you need to do is to remove the write protection on SD card on a Windows PC. Press Windows +R key at the same time to open the Run box. Input diskpart and hit Enter.
The GoPro HD Hero3 and 3 Plus series of cameras support Micro SD cards up to 64GB.
SDHC are found in 32GB and lower capacity, and SDXC are typically 64GB and above. Next, you need to take write speed or speed class of a MicroSD card into account. For all GoPros, we recommend a minimum of Class 10, which really means that it writes data at a minimum of 10MB per second.
So long as you're using one of these GoPro models and the card is fast enough, you can. Yes, in the new models of GoPro cameras you can use you can use 128GB, 256GB, 400GB, and 512GB microSD cards.
Here are the average recording storage times for an HD HERO2 camera with a 32GB SD card: 1080p (30 fps): 4h 21m. 960p (30 fps): 5h 26m. 720p (60 fps): 4h 21.
Samsung's new 256GB microSD card can hold 12 hours of 4K video.
An SD card is an essential accessory for your GoPro. You're not going to get far shooting without one. But GoPros don't come with memory cards as standard. So unless you're buying one from a retailer that has bundled a memory card with the camera, chances are you'll have to buy a card separately.
