What is a Tableau Data Extract (TDE)? A Tableau data extract is a compressed snapshot of data stored on disk and loaded into memory as required to render a Tableau viz.
Applies to: Tableau Desktop, Tableau Online, Tableau Public, Tableau Server. A parameter is a workbook variable such as a number, date, or string that can replace a constant value in a calculation, filter, or reference line.
Use parameter actions to let your audience change a parameter value through direct interaction with a viz, such as clicking or selecting a mark. You can use parameter actions with reference lines, calculations, filters, and SQL queries, and to customize how you display data in your visualizations.
To change the size of marks in the view, do one of the following:
- On the Marks card, click Size, and then move the slider to the left or right. The Size slider affects different marks in different ways, as described in the following table. Mark Type. Description.
- From the Data pane, drag a field to Size on the Marks card.
Option 1: Create a URL Action which will pass dimensions to the target URL

- Open the source dashboard in Tableau Desktop.
- Go to Dashboard > Actions
- Select Add Action > URL
- In the URL field, enter the URL of the published target dashboard.

A Traditional Filter can be created by simply dragging a field onto the =Filters' shelf. Quick filter is used to view the filtering options and filter each worksheet on a dashboard while changing the values dynamically (within the range defined) during the run time.
To create Tableau Extract Filters, Change the connection from Live to Extract under the Connection section, and click on the Edit button. Once you click on the Edit Hyperlink, a new window called Extract Data will open. To create our first extract filter, click on the Add.. button.
Use the calculated field as a filter and link it to the Year parameter. Drag the newly created calculated field (“Date Year”) to the Filters view card and a filter box will appear. Under the General tab, select “Use All” to use all of the different years in the data source and select the Condition Tab.
Option 2: Exclusion Filter Using Only Relevant Values
- Right-click [Product Container] in the data pane, and select Duplicate.
- Drag [Product Container (copy)] to the Filters shelf.
- In the Filter dialog, check all options that should appear in the final filter card and click OK.
By default, all filters that you set in Tableau are computed independently. That is, each filter accesses all rows in your data source without regard to other filters. However, you can set one or more categorical filters as context filters for the view. You can think of a context filter as being an independent filter.
In Tableau Online or Tableau Server, click a drop-down menu in the Source Field column, and select a field. Then select a target data source and field. In Tableau Desktop, click Add Filter. In the Add Filter dialog box, select source and target data sources and fields.
