Your account is considered open from the date you're approved for the card. If you don't activate your card your account will still be open, you just won't be able to use it.
The length of time that you have to activate your card will depend on the issuer. American Express gives you 45 days to activate, after which they will deactivate the card and you'll need to request a replacement card. Chase, on the other hand, gives you 60 days before they simply activate the card for you.
Processing your application and issuing your account number could take a day or two. And you may have to wait seven to 10 business days to receive a debit card and some account information in the mail. If you'd prefer to open an account in-person, the process may take much longer (i.e. 30 minutes to an hour or more).
