Peña retired from the DEA in 2014. Peña was raised in Kingsville, Texas, and attended Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) where he studied Sociology and Psychology. In 2019, he published Manhunters: How We Took Down Pablo Escobar co-authored with Steve Murphy.
In 2019, he was found guilty of a number of criminal charges related to his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel, and is currently serving a life sentence at ADX Florence.

Guzmán earned enough standing and began working for Félix Gallardo directly. Throughout most of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Mexican drug traffickers were also middlemen for the Colombian trafficking groups, and transported cocaine through the U.S.-Mexico border.
Javier Peña retired from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Special Agent in Charge (SAC) in January 2014 after 30 years of service.

Félix Gallardo kept a low profile, and in 1987 moved with his family to Guadalajara. He was arrested in Mexico on April 8, 1989, and was charged by the authorities in Mexico and the United States with the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena, racketeering, drug smuggling, and multiple violent crimes.
Operations. The Sinaloa Cartel has a presence in 17 of the 31 Mexican states, with important centers in Mexico City, Tepic, Toluca, Zacatecas, Guadalajara, and most of the state of Sinaloa.
Los Tigres del Norte wrote a song called "La Reina del Sur" is based on the story of Teresa Mendoza, a fictional drug lord. The author of the book about Teresa Mendoza, La Reina del Sur stated that the story is partly based on Sandra Ávila Beltrán's life.
