A 3-ply is a yarn with three single yarns spun together.
Typically, 4 ply yarn is equivalent to medium weight yarn, which means that it is possible for double knit yarn to be 4 ply as well. Now that you know what the difference is between double knitting wool vs 4 ply yarn, you can pick out your next yarn with less confusion and more confidence.
If you use DK for a 4 ply pattern it will come out bigger so, if the pattern tells you to knit for, say, 4" or 10cms you will have to make it a bit longer to be in proportion. The easiest thing would be to try to find a pattern in DK or to buy some inexpensive 4ply yarn and use your DK yarn for something else.

In North America, yarns are often referred to by their descriptive names, like a “worsted yarn” instead of a “number four yarn.” Under this system, worsted yarn is considered a medium weight number four yarn with a knitting gauge of 16-20 stitches for every four inches of knitting.

Fingering yarn often known as superfine weight yarn is a bit heavier than lace weight yarn and creates a slightly heavier fabric. It has a fine gauge and is perfect for any openwork patterns. This yarn is also known as fingering, sock and baby yarn.
Sport weight yarn and DK (double knitting) weight yarn are often viewed as interchangeable, but they do have a slight difference. As you will see on the criteria listed with the icons to the right, sport weight yarn is a teeny bit lighter or finer than DK weight.

8/2 is a 2 ply, 8/4 is a 4 ply and 8/8 is an 8 ply. They get progressively fatter and therefore have less yardage per pound. The 16/2 is half of the size of a #8……so that first number sort of gives you an idea of the size of the yarn. The higher that number is the finer the yarn.
Avoid using singles yarn to make projects that will get a lot of friction, like socks, as they felt quicker as well. But for super-soft and warm hats, cowls, mittens, and sweaters? Single-ply yarn is an ideal candidate.

4 ply and 5 ply also called sock yarn, baby yarn. The construction of these yarns is a little different. Sock yarn often contains a little nylon to give a sock additional structure. This is often used to make fabulous shawls or hats, and the dyes are often random colours.
A ply is a strand of fiber that makes up a piece of yarn. These are called singles or single ply yarns. Single ply yarn adds a distinct aesthetic to knit and crocheted items crafted from it. You might notice a softer overall feel with less distinct stitch definition. Most single ply yarn will have a halo around it.
The number of wraps will act as a gauge to assess the thickness of unmarked yarn; for example 12 wraps per inch is 12 wpi, and is used to calculate how much yarn is required for various articles,so that 12 wpi is equivalent to DK,8 ply (worsted weight, medium weight) yarn.
