If you're used to buying tailored clothing from US retailers, you'll know that your suit jacket size should roughly translate to your chest circumference as measured in inches. For a slimmer fit, choose a jacket size ~1″ smaller than your (body measurement) chest circumference.

The size label on a suit jacket will include a number—typically between 34 and 52—and a letter or two. The numbers are the chest size of the jacket (not to be confused with your chest measurement, which is different—more on that later), and usually they're offered in even sizes.

How to Take Your Measurements

Raincoats are sized like suit jackets, with the number denoting the circumference of your chest, and the length letter (L, R, S), referring to the cut of the bottom and the length of the arms as there is a correlation between chest size and arm length.
Hold the tape at the center back of your neck. With a friend's help, measure across your shoulder to your elbow, and down to your wrist. The total length in inches is your sleeve length. With your upper arms flat at your sides, measure around your chest and arms.
Steps to Measure a Dress
- Bust: The measurement is taken from side seam to side seam directly under the armhole or sleeve.
- Waist: This is the smallest part of your waist.
- Hip: This is the widest part of your hip, across the hipbone.
- Flare: This is length of the flare of your dress.
Chest width: Measure from the bottom of one armhole across the chest to the bottom of the opposite armhole. Waist width: Place the measuring tape where the natural waist would fall, usually a bit lower than halfway down the blazer, and measure from one side of the jacket across to the other.
How to Measure Your Waist
- Start at the top of your hip bone, then bring the tape measure all the way around your body, level with your belly button.
- Make sure it's not too tight and that it's straight, even at the back. Don't hold your breath while measuring.
- Check the number on the tape measure right after you exhale.
