Microsoft Surface Pro 7: Still great. Still not a laptop. For anyone in need of a supremely portable computer, there are few better options.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 improves on one of the best 2-in-1 laptops around with strong 10th Gen Intel performance and a long-overdue USB-C port. The Surface Pro 7's sharp display, ample power and excellent optional Type Cover keyboard make it one of the best laptops you can buy if you want a detachable.

Surface Pro uses U-series for Core i5The Core i5 version, which is fanless is running a Core i5-7300U processor. It falls under the Intel U-series with a TDP draw of 15W. Its base frequency is 2.60GHz with a max turbo ceiling of 3.50Ghz. That's not in the new Surface Pro.
Microsoft's new Surface lineup has one built right in. Surface user-facing cameras capture 5MP still images and 1080p video, while the vast majority of competing laptops capture 1MP images and 720p video. That might not have mattered as recently as February, when we reviewed the Surface Pro 7 Windows tablet.
Microsoft Surface Pro 7In addition to the typical great performance and battery life you can expect, the seventh-edition Surface Pro finally gets a USB-C port. The Surface laptop's super-portable size makes it ideal for high school and college students who may be carrying a lot of gear.
In my tests, the Surface Pro 7 runs Chrome proper with two dozen tabs, streams YouTube videos and Netflix without any issues, and is more than powerful enough to handle RAW photo editing in Photoshop. Unless you really need the USB-C port you could get a Surface Pro 6 and it'd still crush.
For most people, the $899 Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage should be sufficient, providing you're mostly using cloud storage options. You'll need to step up to the $1,199 model I've been testing for a black variant — the base versions are only available in silver.
Connections. 1 x USB 3.0, 3.5mm Headphone jack, microSDXC card reader, Mini DisplayPort, Cover port, Surface Connect port.
Specs for the Surface Pro 7traditional mini-DisplayPort with a USB-C port that can provide video out. Rounding out connectivity are a headphone jack, a Surface Connect port, a connector for the keyboard, and a microSD card slot.
Currently, Microsoft is selling its Surface Pro 7 tablet with no Type Cover for $750 up to $2300 depending on the configuration. Its lowest-end option comes with the Intel Ice Lake Core i3-1005G1 CPU, 128 GB of storage, and just 4 GB of RAM to be barely enough for Windows 10.
How good is the Surface Pro 7 for drawing? The Surface Pro 7's screen is one of its weakest features. It's not the resolution – at 2,736 x 1,824 it's a smidge less dense than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro at 2,732 x 2,048 – nor the shape; the 3:2 aspect ratio is less restrictive to draw on than a widescreen display.
The USB-C connector looks similar to a micro USB connector at first glance, though it's more oval in shape and slightly thicker to accommodate its best feature: flippability. Like Lightning and MagSafe, the USB-C connector has no up or down orientation.
Plug an external keyboard, mouse, and display into your USB-C dock. Make sure the dock is plugged in to get power. Plug the end of a USB-C cable that's connected to your USB-C dock into the USB-C port on your adapter. Plug the Surface Connect end of the adapter into the Surface Connect port on your Surface.
All of the Surfaces connect using HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), although they do it in slightly different ways: The Surface RT and Surface 2 contain a micro-HDMI port. The Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 contain a Mini DisplayPort port.
The Surface USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Adapter lets you connect 3.5mm audio accessories, like earbuds or headphones, to your Surface using the USB-C port.
