LASIK can help correct lazy eye, but only when it's caused by a difference in the refractive error between both eyes (refractive amblyopia). LASIK surgery can make the prescriptions in your eyes more similar, reducing the issues that accompany one eye having to work harder than the other.
Short- or long-sightedness, can be corrected using glasses. These usually need to be worn constantly and checked regularly. Glasses may also help to straighten a squint, and in some cases can fix the lazy eye without the need for further treatment. Your child may say they can see better without their glasses.
The most common cause of lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles that position the eyes. This imbalance can cause the eyes to cross in or turn out, and prevents them from working together. Difference in sharpness of vision between the eyes (refractive amblyopia).
Eye patches are often recommended for treating corneal abrasions despite the lack of evidence for their use. This systematic review was conducted to determine the effects of the eye patch when used to treat corneal abrasions.
Eye exercises are beneficial for strengthening
eye muscles. They can also train the brain and the
weaker eye to work together more effectively.
Other treatments
- In-office vision therapy. Vision therapy is a type of physical therapy for eyes.
- Eye patching.
- Corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.
- Eye drops.
- Surgery.
Eye Circles: While sitting or standing, move your eyes in a clockwise direction 20 times, making the circle as wide as you can. Relax for 10 seconds, then repeat in the opposite direction. Doing this three times daily will help to stretch your eye muscles.

Anisometropia affects our binocular vision.Individuals with anisometropia typically see one larger image in one eye and one smaller image in the other. This causes their vision to blur. As a result, one eye may become weaker than the other, which may prompt the brain to favor the stronger eye.
Apply a piece of adhesive tape, about 15 centimetres long, to the eye pad (Figure ?1). Ask the patient to close both eyes. Position the eye pad diagonally over the closed lids of the affected eye and tape firmly, but gently, to the forehead and cheek. Apply a second and third piece of tape to ensure the pad lies flat.
Without treatment, lazy eye can get worse over time. But the condition is treatable.
Particularly if it begins in adulthood, strabismus can cause double vision. Sometimes strabismus is due to a medical condition like thyroid problems, myasthenia gravis, or diabetes. Other times it happens due to eye or head trauma, or because an eye doesn't see well. Often, no cause can be identified.
Does Amblyopia Get Worse With Age? Even though the visual impairments from amblyopia begin in childhood, they can continue into adulthood with worsening symptoms if left untreated. Still, children with untreated amblyopia may have permanent vision loss before they even reach adulthood.
Particularly if lazy eye is detected early in life and promptly treated, reduced vision can be avoided. But if left untreated, lazy eye can cause severe visual disability in the affected eye, including legal blindness. It's estimated that about 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. population has some degree of amblyopia.
Eye drops with a medication called atropine, which blurs the strong eye so your child won't need to wear a patch. This also forces their brain to use the weak eye. A Bangerter filter worn over the eyeglass lens of the stronger eye to blur their vision so they have to use the weak eye.
It is estimated that 3 to 5% of the general population suffers from this form of visual impairment. If not treated early, an amblyopic eye may never develop good vision and may even become functionally blind. With early diagnosis and treatment, the sight in the lazy eye can be restored.
How to exercise your eyes
- Hold your pointer finger a few inches away from your eye.
- Focus on your finger.
- Slowly move your finger away from your face, holding your focus.
- Look away for a moment, into the distance.
- Focus on your outstretched finger and slowly bring it back toward your eye.
Amblyopia, often diagnosed during a patient's first eye examination, can be managed in a general optometric practice to dramatically improve quality of life in the developing child.
