Babies age two and under can fly free on domestic U.S. flights with one paying passenger as long as they sit in the passenger's lap. It is safer for a child to ride in a car seat in the plane, and if you prefer that option, you'll need to pay full fare for a seat for the baby regardless of age.
Lap babies (younger than age 2) fly free on domestic flights, usually one per paying adult. (You may need to present proof of age.) This does save you money, but it's important to note that babies riding in airplanes are safest riding in government-approved car seats.
(*) Children aged 2 years and older pay the full fare and have their own seat and also have a full baggage allowance. Each infant must be accommpanied by at least one adult.
Infant TravelAirlines typically offer parents of children under 2 years of age the opportunity to hold the child on their lap. Tickets for lap babies are generally free or require payment of airline fees and taxes only on domestic flights, though a small ticket fee is commonly included on international flights.
Most U.S. carriers — including Delta, Southwest, United, JetBlue and American — allow up to two babies under the age of two per adult. But some airlines may require each baby travels with one adult, so be sure to check on the rules before booking. Lap babies may not get their own carry-ons.
You'll pay an infant fare, which is a percentage of the adult fare, when your infant sits on an adult's lap for the journey. If you'd like your infant to have their own seat, you'll pay a child fare.
Most airlines will allow you to carry a young baby in your lap for the entire journey, but will also give you the option to book an extra seat. We always recommend booking an additional seat for your baby and using an approved car seat. It's much safer during turbulence to have your baby strapped safely into a seat.
The child's meal is suitable for children who are able to eat solid food and are available on long haul flights. Please order your child's meal at least 24 hours before you fly, which you can do using Manage My Booking. Go to 'Special requests' and under 'Special meals' you'll find the 'Child meal' option.
Per FAA regulations, children under 2 years of age are not allowed to sit in a seat equipped with an airbag seat belt.
In 2015, the house passed the Families Flying Together Act, a law that requires airlines to seat parents and children together. “Airlines ask the age of the child when you're reserving seats not because a child gets a discount but in order to see if they will need to seat you together,†says Hobica.
The FAA does not require any child under age 2 to fly in his or her own seat, nor any child of any age to fly in a car seat. Air carrier flights are safe.
If you're travelling with an infant who will weigh less than 11kg on the day of travel, you can request a baby bassinet when you book your flight. Your infant must also fit comfortably in the bassinet. Our cabin crew will confirm that your infant safely fits in the bassinet before affixing it at your seat position.
Parents should be well-prepared for flying with children, no matter in which class they fly. Most airlines don't have specific, written rules about an infant or child policy in first class. They can get a child ready to sleep and pass the time with crafts, hand puppets, art, face painting, and magic tricks.
Baby's and Toddlers in Business Class. Just as you would in economy, you can book for a child under 2 to sit on your lap without their own seat. They are restrained with a lap belt that loops into yours for takeoff and landing.
Generally children upto age 12 years traveling alone are classified as "Unaccompanied Minors†for which we provide a dedicated service. On purely domestic routes, Unaccompanied Minors are children above 5 years and under 12 years. "Unaccompanied Minors" will be accepted on Air India operated flights only.
Children younger than five are not permitted to fly by themselves. Children aged 12 and over are considered 'adults' by airline ticketing standards, but parents can specifically request an unaccompanied minor service for children aged 12 to 15.
