Dark pigments take an important place in Rembrandt's palette. Apart from dark-colored umber, artists used black pigments, especially for painting black clothes of his sitters, which were almost always done in bone or ivory black. He also used black pigments for making wash-like sketches over the ground layer.

Rembrandt was not left-handed, and he must have realized his mistake in copying his reversed mirror image (which is surprising, given his lifetime of painting self-portraits). The National Portrait Gallery owns more than one hundred portraits of George Washington (1732–1799) in a variety of mediums, including prints, sculptures, and paintings. Although many date from the American Revolution, even more were created during and after Washington's presidency.
Peale's interest in creating a benchmark portrait of America's greatest hero became a life-long obsession. His attempt to standardize depictions of Washington began with the renowned painting Patriae Pater (Father of his Country), which was purchased by congress in 1832 and hangs in the Old Senate Chamber to this day.
The offered portrait, Patriae Pater, is based on a painting Peale produced in the 1820's, long after Washington had died in 1799. The portrait symbolically presents Washington as a noble, almost godlike figure, with a mask of Jupiter carved into the keystone.

No self-portraits were listed in the famous 1656 inventory, and only a handful of the paintings remained in the family after his death. Rembrandt's self-portraits were created by the artist looking at himself in a mirror, and the paintings and drawings therefore reverse his actual features.
Rembrandt died within a year of his son, on October 4, 1669 in Amsterdam, and was buried in an unmarked grave in the Westerkerk.
