Today's modern taper is anywhere from 12.5 to 15 inches (which is the total circumference of the pant bottom), if that helps. Tapering the pants should cost no more than $40-45.
Mom jeans are meant to sit high on your waist, which unfortunately means the wrong pair can leave you with a seriously unflattering crotch situation. Look for a pair that isn't too tight in the front. You want a straight leg that skims your curves just so.
The denim edge is used in the jean construction. The outseam of the jean is the self-edge of the denim fabric – and is the identifier of selvedge. As the above photograph reveals, the selvedge has the white edge with blue thread. This is the “self-edge” of the denim.
This is because cuffed pants take more work and fabric to produce, so they tend to be associated with better quality clothes. Cuffed pants give more weight to your shoes and better balance your proportions. If you're a taller guy, go for 1.25-1.5 inch cuffs to get everything in proportion.
Rolling is what most guys mean when they say 'cuffing your jeans'. A rolled hem is one that's turned up twice. Never roll more than twice or you'll look like you have bagels on your legs. Aim for a 1.5″ cuff – the key is making the first roll less than an inch.
You should cuff your jeans when:
You want to show a little skin and a lot of shoe! Your jeans are a little too long & you want to skip the tailor. You want to liven up a worn-in pair.Initially known as 'self-edge', the selvedge is the narrow, tightly woven band on both edges of the denim fabric. A selvedge end prevents the edge of the denim from unravelling and shows a clean, finished look. Old shuttle looms produce denim where selvedges are closed.
Step 1: Take the hem of your pant and make one fold up about two inches. Step 2: Smooth out the material to make a nice flat cuff. Step 3: Take the top of the cuff and fold the hem in behind the back, towards the pant leg. Step 3: Smooth out the cuff to create one uniform fold.
2. This feels obvious, but isn't: Jeans that are too big are easier to fix than jeans that are too small. It's always easier for a tailor to take things a size smaller than the opposite. (Though denim panels can be added to give you some additional wiggle room, it's not ideal.)
Steps
- Turn the pants inside out and put them on.
- Pinch the edges of the pants where you want to taper them.
- Have a friend draw a line where you want a new seam to be.
- Insert pins and then draw a line if you don't have anyone to help you.
- Lay a pair of tapered trousers over the trousers you want to taper.
“We suggest taking the jeans to your favorite tailor and have them narrow the thigh and give the leg a slight taper, bringing in the ankle, for a skinnier fit.”
Taper Fit : Tapered jeans that are simply roomier at the top and narrower towards the ankle. They are usually fairly form-fitting and considered a type of skinny jeans. Narrow Fit : A Narrow leg jean, the way we interpret it, means reduced fullness at the knee and bottom opening.
