Apple's iPhone is a popular product due to its many features. If you want an iPhone but don't have the budget for a plan, you can easily turn an iPhone into a prepaid phone by removing the SIM card and replacing it with one activated for an AT&T prepaid plan.
US carriers are not very friendly when it comes to prepaid plans. AT&T does not offer a prepaid SIM for the iPhone. Your best bet is to check with T-Mobile. Nowhere on there or during the ordering process for an unlimited plan SIM is there any mention (for or against), any specific unlocked GSM phone make or model.

Just go to the App Store and download the FreedomPop app via Itunes. Using the app, you can get free voice, texting and voicemail using your iPhone on any cell provider (though don't forget that data charges will still apply for your provider).
You can only use your old handset to get a prepaid SIM from the same provider as your previous one. Many phones are programmed to only work with the providers you got the phone from in the beginning. If you wish to switch to another provider, you have to get a new handset along with the SIM card.
