A keel cat is stuck with the keels down, all the time-as such, there is no way to prevent the boat from “tripping over herself ” in storm-force conditions with large breaking cross seas. Off the wind a catamaran with fully raised daggerboards is much faster because wetted surface has been greatly reduced.
Most things stay put even in moderately rough seas. Because catamarans don't have a big heavy keel loaded with lead, even if you hole the boat, it will float. Production cats have so much buoyancy built in that they are next to impossible to sink.
Sprint 15 CatamaranThey are also especially safe. The biggest safety feature of a catamaran, as mentioned above, is their two hulls. This increased stability makes them perfect for even the most inexperienced sailors. The best catamaran for beginners is probably the Sprint 15.
Cats can't handle rough seas. Some customers have the impression that cats are fine in some sea conditions but not others. We're not sure where this myth got started – but it's just flat out wrong: catamarans are superior in every way in rough seas.
Mike Kiely: Catamarans are very stable and have natural buoyancy, making them unsinkable. Yes, they can capsize in a bad accident, but it's better to be rescued floating on the water's surface than sinking to the bottom in a monohull. Plus, moving around on a flat deck is much safer than on a deck at an angle.
Re: Sailing a Catamaran SoloMultihulls are great for singlehanding. Nice stable platform, and sort of like a playpen that is hard to fall out of. Also, I'm getting more comfortable is heavier air with a reef in place. I was out solo in 15+ the other day, and it was not arduous at all.

Re: why do catamarans cost more than monohulls? Larger surface area = hull materials = dollars to build. Relative profit margins are no different mono to multi.. Materials are similar no cost difference.
Living full time on a catamaran will cost between $2,000 per month and $5,000 per month for a family of four and a little less for a couple with no children, plus the cost to maintain your boat which on average costs between 5% and 10% of the cost of the boat but also varies depending on the age and condition and size

We think a catamaran with about 30 inches of clearance is ideal. Increasing the BDC means more windage, which is a negative. Much less than 30 inches, and wave slap becomes a problem in rowdy sea conditions. Longitudinal under-bridge deck fins reduce wave impacts and strengthen the bridge deck.

Only a small handful of states currently require an official licence to sail, however, most will require the sailor to have undergone some type of boating safety course.
It can take anywhere between a couple of days and a couple of weeks to learn to sail a sailboat safely. If you want to attain a sailing certification that proves your ability, this will take you 10 days.
The answer, of course, is that although there are performance cruising catamarans that do sail very well – even upwind – many cruising cats are under-powered floating homes, impeded by plenty of windage.
