When do the new number plates come out? From 1st September 2019, all new cars registered in the UK will carry the number 69, in March 2020, it will be the release of the 20 number plate and so on.
Registering your brand-new carIn most cases, when buying a new vehicle, the dealer often registers the vehicle for you. If they do, you'll get a V5C registration certificate (also known as a log book) in the post within 6 weeks. However, in some cases, it may be down to you to register the vehicle yourself.
Vehicles first registered from 1st March 2020 through to the end of August 2020 will be on a 20 reg plate. There are currently some 1,203,097 registrations in the 20 series to choose from.

DVLA aims to send out a new V5C to you as soon as possible, usually 4 weeks after getting the old V5C from the seller. This may take longer because of coronavirus. If you do not get it within 4 weeks: complete form V62 - 'Application for a vehicle registration certificate'
It's free to apply online or by post. You need the vehicle's log book (V5C). If you already have a private number on your vehicle, apply to take it off first. You could lose the right to use the number if you do not.
*The first registration fee of £55 may need to be paid. This can be sent to the DVLA only via cheque or postal order; frustratingly, there is no online payment system as of yet.
To transfer ownership online you'll need to complete a form on the DVLA website. To do this you need the details of the new owner, you'll need the 11-digit reference number from the car's V5C. Once the online form is completed and submitted you'll receive an email confirmation.
If you are buying a number plate and you want it transferred onto your vehicle straight away then you will need to provide the following documents: The original of the vehicle's most recent V5C Registration Certificate, sometimes known as the logbook. Details of current MOT test certification (if applicable).
According to DVLA, all you need to do is “keep the original registration number” this is because the old number plate will most likely be reassigned to that same vehicle if you decide to take your personalised number plate off or decide to sell your vehicle and want to keep your new plate when you do so.
Once your application has been submitted, it will take around two weeks for the transfer to process, although it may take longer if the DVLA want to inspect the vehicles involved. Once completed, you will receive a new V5C registration for the vehicle that had its registration removed.
Send all of the following to DVLA :
- a V317 'transfer or retain a vehicle registration number' form - the address is on the form.
- the vehicle's log book (V5C) or green 'new keeper' slip with a completed V62 'application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C'
- the £80 transfer fee.
To move your registration mark to another vehicle you will need to complete a V317 form and send your application to the DVLA along with the V5C registration certificates (log books) for both vehicles.
Once the vehicle is sold on or scrapped, the DVLA rules are very clear…. you will lose your private number plate! You should refer to the DVLA for full rules and regulations.
It currently costs £80 to retain a number plate by taking it off a vehicle. Payment of this fee will be shown on the V778 (Retention document) when the number plate retention application process is complete. There is then no further charge when you wish to put the number plate onto a suitable vehicle.
