Trout are Pickier than BassWhile bass fight harder, trout are harder to catch. You usually have one chance to catch a trout. Fishing for trout is generally more challenging than fishing for bass.
The fish found its niche in nature in fast current. The tail is proportionately bigger than a largemouth and over time smallmouth have evolved stronger swimming muscles than their cousins. The fish is built for speed and contoured for current. River smallmouth spend most of their life "working out".
When ice fishing, walleye are caught jigging or on tip-ups. Walleye are not known for their fight in fish below about 24" in size. They fight well if over that size, however.
Browns are powerful while bows are more agile. Steelhead, even the Great Lakes ones, it's not even close. We have a few different strains of Rainbow Trout in BC. The Pennask Rainbow Trout are the hardest fighting fish I've come across in Stillwater.
SIZE: The length of smallmouth bass most commonly caught is between 12 and 16 in (30.5 cm to 40.6 cm).
Contrary to popular belief, catfish do not root through muddy bottom areas and look for decaying forms of food. In reality, they mainly dine on small minnows, tiny bluegills or crappie, crayfish, worms and freshwater shrimp.

Northern PikeThese guys are big with a maximum recorded length at 59 inches and weight at 63 pounds. These freshwater fish are well known to put up a good fight and are also known for taking an extra long time on the line.
Lake trout are hard-fighting gamefish that taste great, but are often misunderstood.
Coho Salmon: The FighterCoho Salmon don't grow quite as big as Chinooks, but they make up for it by fighting twice as hard. They have a reputation as the toughest and most hard-headed of Salmon species. They aren't most people's favorite fish, but this fighting spirit earns them second place in many anglers' hearts.
But a small cadre of anglers realized that carp are actually difficult to hook, and once they are on the line, they fight with power an enough tenacity to test both tackle and an angler's resolve.
For the sake of comparison, the International Game Fish Assn. lists as the all-tackle world record an 11-pound, 15-ounce smallmouth caught in Tennessee's Dale Hollow Lake in 1955.
How to tell them apart?
- Stripes. A largemouth bass has broad stripe running horizontally whereas a smallmouth bass has lines running vertically .
- Mouth extension in relation to the eye. A smallmouth's goes to the medium point of the eye generally, while a largemouth's extends beyond it.
- Dorsal fins.
- Scales on the cheek.
I have a friend stocking a lake for smallmouth and the fisheries biologist said that smallmouth bass don't do well with bluegill as they won't eat them often enough to control the population. They are stocking rock bass and crappie instead.
Technically, it should be easier to lip a rock bass because of its smaller teeth, but its mouth is also fairly tiny, so take extra care if you're a man of chubbier thumbs.
Too few bass will not be able to control other fish populations; too many bass will deplete the pond of its resources. If adult bass are needed, stocking them at a rate of 5-10 bass per acre will help maintain a pond's food chain and result in a healthy, thriving pond.
That data showed that smallmouth in our area water can reach 18 inches long in as little as six years, but again, the data varied widely with different bodies of water. Fiss said, “[Smallmouth bass] grow much quicker in reservoirs.
The fish will scatter along the gravel banks of the creeks and on the main lake so try fast-moving lures such as spinnerbaits in white or chartreuse or medium-diving crankbaits in crawfish, fire tiger or bluegill colors. Wind-blown banks usually produce the best action for reservoir smallmouth in autumn.
Females reach sexual maturity at three years whereas males don't until four years of age. It can take up to ten years for Smallmouth to reach a length of about twenty inches and a weight of five or six pounds. Some smallmouths live up to fifteen years.
Largemouth bass readily adapt to most ponds and can easily reproduce.
In a Florida study, 822 trophy bass (10 pounds and up) given to taxidermists showed a mean age of 9.7 years. That's a growth rate of about a pound a year.
Larval and young-of-the-year smallmouth bass are preyed upon by larger bass, yellow perch, sunfishes, and northern pike. Other animals that probably eat young smallmouth include herons, frogs, and some snakes. As adults, smallmouth bass are eaten only by larger bass, northern pike, and musky.
The females' anal opening is more of an elliptical shape than the males circular one. They are both the same basics shape with slightly less curvature. 4) Often times the male largemouth bass will have a neatly trimmed mustache and beard. The facial hair is a dead give away for the adult male largemouth bass.

Fish have nerves, just like cats, dogs, and humans, so they can feel pain. Hooked fish endure not only physical pain but also terror. When they're removed from their natural environment, they start to suffocate. Fish who are caught and released often still die from such injuries.
The upper jaw of smallmouth bass extends to the middle of the eye. The smallmouth's coloration and hue may vary according to environmental variables such as water clarity or diet.
They are efficient predators, and eat whatever live prey is available to them. Their diet usually consists of insects, fish, and crayfish, but they will occasionally eat tadpoles and frogs. Here in Oneida Lake, smallmouth bass are known to eat yellow perch, gizzard shad, crayfish, and even zebra mussels.
